CHARACTER NAME: John Constantine
AGE: 35
CANON DC TV (Constantine, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow)
CANON POINT DC’s LoT 3.18 “The Good The Bad and The Cuddly”
HISTORY: Here.
PERSONALITY:
John appears to be extremely self-serving, especially on the surface. He is a classic Slytherin: ambitious, cunning, and will use any ends to justify his means. He is also arrogant and often makes brash, impulsive decisions that get others hurt. The most ready example is what’s referred to as “The Newcastle Incident.” John summons a higher demon to force a lesser demon out of a possessed young girl and instead his recklessness results in her soul being dragged to Hell and his soul damned along with hers. Everyone he roped into that event i.e. everyone in his life except for Chaz hates him now. John is the type of person who can’t stand idle while people are in trouble, however, even if his meddling might likely make things worse. For a long time after this, he’s reluctant to perform any more exorcisms on children, but of course the second that problem presents itself again he jumps into action.

Though he claims to prefer a solitary existence, John is dependent on others for both companionship and to aid with his cause. He will manipulate others or present himself differently than he is in order to get them to agree to whatever he needs at the time. Example: John accidentally imbues his friend Chaz with every soul at a club that’s burning down around him. This allows Chaz to survive this incident and then come back from the dead as many times as souls that he carries with him. Basically the moment he realizes this happened, John ropes Chaz into helping him against the forces of darkness. This ultimately destroys Chaz’s marriage, but he stands by John anyway. John’s natural charisma often lends to people helping him even when they really shouldn’t, and he has no qualms about using it to this end. He also is a very lonely individual and will use sex/intimacy to avoid thinking about it. He’s a fan of distraction over commitment here, but it is worth noting that he has virtually no preference when it comes to sexual partners. As long as they’re legal and willing, he prefers it to being alone.

John has never been a careful individual, but being damned has made him even more reckless. He values his life as next to nothing and will throw it on the line again and again to save innocent people. It is worth noting he will also sacrifice his friends in this manner. In this vein, he is selfless even if he goes about it in ways that often put others at risk and don’t consider their feelings. His friend Gary Lester who was also with him at Newcastle comes to him with a terrible demon he’d accidentally set free. In order to save Atlanta and the general populous, John traps the demon inside of Gary and allows it to consume him from the inside out. He stays with Gary for every brutal moment up until his death and Gary idolizes him even then. He shows up later down the road by possessing a corpse in order to warn John; and in the comics, Gary shows up over and over to haunt him. This incident is regarded as one of his greater regrets in this DCTV version as well.

Towards the end of his self-titled series, John admits that every day right after he wakes up he envisions that all of his friends are dead. He says he does this because it will “lessen the blow” when he eventually gets them killed. He is extremely self-aware of how dangerous he is to be around, but he needs others to accomplish his goals and refuses to shy away from the harder decisions. For as self-assured as he is, John knows he can’t do everything himself and that there are actually things that other people are better at.

This is what makes his alliance with Ollie and the Legends unique: John drifts in and out of their lives and only shows up to help them when he can. Though he never consults others, he also lectures them for not asking his opinion at the end of Series 3, criticizing them for destroying a demon in the manner they did because it opened a doorway that other baddies will come through. In the newest episodes beyond his canon point, he actually joins their team because a dark force visits him with threats and he realizes he needs to help them again if they’re all going to survive. It’s also obvious that he’s scared and seeking protection though he would never say as much - always needing to appear superior to others in order to be comfortable working with them.

John’s self-preservation instincts are very high though that seems contradictory to his impulsiveness. He believes that he’s needed on Earth and he’s also scared of going to Hell. He will do almost anything to avoid death though putting himself (and his friends) in danger is second nature. At the end of the latest episode, he tries to convince a fairy godmother to be his protectorate, but even she would rather face Hell than to be tied to John Constantine. He, of course, does this behind everyone’s backs so they won’t know he’s being hunted. Yet again he’s leading trouble to their doorstep without remorse.

CANON POWERS:
John’s powers can all be nestled under a broader category of “magic.” In the DC universe, this is overarching and bizarre, but his strengths are in what he refers to as “the dark arts.” Exorcism, conjuring, glamour are just some of his main skills, but he’s good at improvising in a pinch. He’s been studying magic since he was a teenager and has an obvious gift for it, but that comes as a double-edged sword. He’ll be completely lost without it here.
